Just Don’t Do It
April 15, 2008
Temptation aside, don’t fall prey to the “Oprah outfit” for air travel. The “Oprah outfit”, as my husband has playfully coined, is the comfortable, baggy sweatsuit usually worn with frumpy gym shoes and a ponytail. Please know there ARE other options.
I completely understand the temptation. I am a mother of two and a businesswoman. When I go ANYWHERE, I have in tow my heavy computer bag, my huge tote, usually a stroller, the kids air travel activities and a couple of stuffed animals and baby blankets. Looking pulled together isn’t always easy. Here is what I have found:
- Dress in layers (makes easy climate transitions)
- Consider bringing a hip length sweater. I use it as a blanket on the plane.
- Don’t dress in linen or cotton (too wrinkle prone)
- Spandex is your friend. Find a cute pair of jeans with a little stretch.
- Wear easy off shoes; flip flops or ballet flats (I bring a pair of socks in my purse in case my feet get cold on the plane)
- I don’t find bras very comfortable so I opt for a camisole with a shirt over it.
- Certain clothing and accessories can set off an alarm on the metal detector and slow you down.
- Avoid wearing clothing, jewelry or other accessories that contain metal when traveling through the security checkpoints
- If jeans are still too uncomfortable, then knit jersey works for shirts or pants. Once again, Lycra, Spandex and Modal are all our friends. Well, in small doses!
